Cherry Log Christian (DOC) Church
Chancel Choir
The music ministry of
Cherry Log Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is open to all who would
use their talents for individual and corporate worship of God. We do not hold
auditions; however, we do ask that you be faithful and diligent in the
acceptance of a leadership role in worship. Join us as we prepare for worship on
Thursday evenings at 5:00 pm for Handbells, 6:00 pm for the Men’s Chorale or
6:30 pm for Chancel Choir.
Chancel Choir:
The Chancel Choir of Cherry Log Christian Church DOC prepares a wide variety of
musical offerings for Sunday morning worship. The musical experience may vary
from chant, spiritual, and classical to contemporary, traditional, and modern
musical offerings. We now have over forty active members in this fine choir. We
meet on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and practice till 8:00 p.m. We prepare music for
worship each Sunday morning. We have a space for you if you are interested and
want to join this excellent choir.
Cherry Log Christian (DOC) Worship and Music Philosophy:
Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), a great theologian, was born in Copenhagen,
graduated from the University of Copenhagen and then spent two years in Germany
before he returned to Copenhagen. Although his writings covered many areas of
the Christian faith, he was particularly outspoken on the subject of worship.
Kierkegaard was quite critical of many churches whose worship had become "user
friendly." He developed the idea that Christian worship is a drama. He had come
to the conviction that many churches also believed this but that there was an
inappropriate redefining of what it meant. What he observed was that in the
drama, God was to be the prompter, the liturgical leaders (musicians, readers of
the scriptures, preachers and celebrants) had become the actors in the drama,
and the congregation had become the audience in the drama. This understanding of
worship is still maintained and taught in many churches today.
Kierkegaard thought that this understanding of our worship as drama was totally
wrong. People were taking on the wrong rolls. The liturgical leaders (musicians,
readers of the scriptures, preachers and celebrants) were to be the prompters in
worship. All of us, the congregation as well as the liturgical leaders, are the
actors in the drama of worship, and God alone is the audience for the drama.
At Cherry Log we Strive to meet this goal.
