Revised Common Lectionary Readings

“God’s golden thread -- Love.”
Hosea 11:1-11
This and the Psalms text are for those who believe that the OT is about judgment and the NT about grace. In Hosea 11, an agonized God is torn between the demands of judgment and of grace. The images of parent and spouse emphasize the love of God. This love is constantly cast aside by a sinful people.

Welcome to Cherry Log

Our Prayer This WeekEveryone is welcome at Cherry Log Christian Church (DOC).

Our Prayer for the week of July 25-31, 2010
Almighty God, Loving and Forgiving God, God of Mercy and Life, we offer to you our praise as well as our allegiance.  We come renewing our faithfulness and our baptismal covenant to be your people.

We confess that we have confused belonging with faithfulness.  In fact, we have worn ourselves out by trying to be responsible people who belong to the church.  We have signed up for committees, paid our dues, and dusted off our seats by our weekly presence.

But today, Compassionate God, we come not seeing faith as belonging but to experience faith as transforming. Transform us from being pleased with our sometimes painful dedication to finding joy in our giving to others.  Use our hurts not as a statue for martyrdom, but help us to accept the hurt, love the hurt, and so transform our hurt.  Move us from believing in certain doctrines to giving compassion to people who need real acceptance.  Transform us from image people to mission people.  Transform us from being only logical, rational people to being also loving and caring disciples.

Almighty God, stir us beyond our what is normal for people of faith. Ignite your Spirit within us that we may give of ourselves with a passion that is spirited-directed.

Loving God, these spoken and unspoken prayers we offer in the name of the risen Christ.  Amen.

Hear Us O Lord - J. Wyndham

BRING-A-FRIEND ICE CREAM SOCIAL
SUNDAY – August 15th!!
Come one, come all!  Invite all your friends and relatives!!  It’s our annual SUNDAE SUNDAY!  The day you get to eat dessert FIRST!  But mainly the day you get to bring visitors…LOTS of visitors…to Cherry Log Christian Church to see what we’re so excited about!!

Those who can, please bring your best homemade ice cream.  As always, we’ll provide all the toppings (fruits, candies, nuts, syrups - chocolate, butterscotch, strawberry – whipped cream, etc.).  If you want to bring cookies or brownies, that’d be great (please - no cakes or pies).  We’ll have sugar-free and low-fat versions of ice cream, as well as some yogurts.  Your sweet tooth will be the happiest it’s been all year!!

An Ice Cream Social may seem like a frivolous idea and one that is more about eating dessert first than it is about Evangelism, but when you stop and think about it…  There are people in your community – maybe even in your neighborhood – maybe friends of yours - who have given up on church and perhaps even given up on God.

Our God is big enough to tell these people about.  Our God is powerful enough to heal them.  Our God’s compassion is big enough to take away their hurt.  Please spend the coming weeks praying to know just the right someone(s) to invite to Cherry Log Christian Church on Sunday, August 15th.  It just may be that they will find a whole lot more than ice cream waiting for them!

Thanks!  We’ll see you there…with ALL your visitors!!
