Revised Common Lectionary Readings

“A Really Bad Day”

Jeremiah 4:11-12 (13-21), 22-28; Psalm 14

For those who have ever experienced the ‘whirlwind’ of a hurricane, these verses take on more than a metaphorical meaning. The power of a mighty wind to destroy is beyond our ability to measure or control. Insurers estimate damage costs, disaster relief personnel seek to minimize human injury and death, but nothing can stop the wind. The Lord speaks his judgment and it “advances like the clouds” (see vs. 13), but this wind is the desert sirocco, the terrible dust storms that scorch the earth and choke out life (for a visual example of the sirocco see the recent film, Hidalgo).

Our Prayer This WeekOur Prayer for the week of Sept 5-11, 2010
Almighty God, we come to you in prayer, revealing our fears and hopes, our joys and sorrows.  Some of our prayers are new to you.  Some of those who pray have been absent for a while; some of those who pray are praying the same prayers.  At times our prayers have been a scheme to get what we want; some use prayer as a refuge to resort to now and then.  We confess that now and then prayers, prayers only in the midst of pain and fear, do not give us an understanding of prayer.

Eternal God, we want to establish a more familiar relationship with you and you to us. All things have a home: the bird has a nest, the fox has a hole, the bee has a hive. A soul without prayer is a soul without a home.  Our praying and our prayers are the way our souls find a home in your kingdom.  We want a want home in you ever-present kingdom.

We seek to find a home where we are free, not free of obligations and responsibilities, but free to love without reserve and free to be generous knowing that giving regenerates itself.

We seek to find a home where it is easier to risk than to be safe, where silence is more nurturing than noise, and where the heart is of more value than the mind.

We seek to find a home where mission is our vision, where community envelops selfishness, and where institution becomes a means for service.

Almighty God, we are restless; our rest and our home are found in you and you alone.  In the name of the Living Christ we pray. Amen.

Highlights

Dr. Anil Henry to speak at CLCC

Dr. Anil Henry, director of our Disciples’ Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India, will be at Cherry Log for lunch on Wednesday, September 8, from 11:30-1:00.  We are all invited to hear him, but need to make reservations by calling the church office or signing a sheet on the Outreach bulletin board near the Fellowship Hall.

Dr. Henry is a Global Ministries partner.  After completing his education and while he was a surgeon at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Dr.  Henry asked Global Ministries for a  challenge.  He sent his Dad, an Indian doctor, to check out the hospital in Mungeli, and was told, “You want a challenge; you’ve got it.”

This hospital was founded by the Disciples in the late 1800’s, and by the mid 1900’s was a leading provider of treatment for eye problems.  “Eye camps” were established throughout that region.  However, from 1955 until 2000 the hospital suffered from lack of leadership and funding and no longer resembled the hospital of its “glory days.”  Dr. Henry and his family accepted the challenge.

Under Dr. Henry’s leadership, the hospital now has new buildings, new equipment and a vision that is bringing vibrancy back to the hospital.  Two groups of Disciples from Georgia recently visited the hospital.  They were told, “Don’t send money; send people.  Come and see.”  While we may not be able to go to India, Dr. Henry’s visit on September 8 will be our opportunity to “Come and See.”

The Craddock Center will be sponsoring the third Rainbows program.  We will meet at the Craddock Center, 947 Cherry Log Street, Cherry Log  beginning on October 3th through November 21th at 6pm.  Rainbows is an international, non-profit organization that offers peer group support to children and teens (4 - 18 years) who have experienced a loss due to death, divorce, illness, moving or other changes in the family situation.  These groups are facilitated by a Rainbows trained adult volunteer and foster emotional healing in a safe, non-judgmental environment.  A parent support group is offered while the children and teens are in their groups.

There is no cost to the families and a meal will be served at 6 pm prior to the groups. To register your child or for additional information, you may contact The Craddock Center at 706-632-1772 or Beverly Cowan at 704-604-4323 or abcowan@etcmail.com.
